Chaophraya, Birmingham.

My actual birthday diner deserves a post all of its own. The lovely people at Chaophraya, Birmingham invited me in to review the restaurant for my blog. I don’t get to eat Thai food a lot, my boyfriend is a fussy eater and it doesn’t tend to be high on his list of preferences. We’ve been to Sabai Sabai in Harborne once but other than that the last time I had Thai food I was in Thailand two years ago. The restaurant has prime location outside The Bullring and is authentically decorated inside. There’s a really nice outdoor seating area that will be ideal when it gets a bit warmer. The menu is extensive, there’s something for everyone and even my fussy boyfriend found plenty of options. The staff were very friendly and scored massive points telling me I can change anything I want on the menu and have anything as mild or as spicy as I like. I like to know everything is cooked fresh but I also like to know I’m not going to get a funny look if I want chicken instead of prawns or aubergines in my noodles! Luckily the menu catered for my needs and I ordered BBQ sticky pork ribs to start and king prawn red Thai curry (mild) with coconut rice for main. Joe ordered chicken satay and the sizzling beef special with sticky rice. I’m an absolute sucker for ribs and these were spot on. The meat fell off the bone, the BBQ sauce was sticky and sweet and the portion was HUGE. My non pork/non rib eating boyfriend even enjoyed them too! My curry was perfect. Not so mild that it was bland but mild enough not to make me need a pint of milk, the rich and creamy sauce complimented the coconut rice and king prawns perfectly. The prawns came with tails on, heads off – just how I like them. I couldn’t finish my main because I was so full but writing this now I wish I’d taken it home in a doggy bag because it would have made the perfect post work meal this evening. Joe was equally happy with his meal and I’m so glad that he can finally put Thai on his list of foods he eats! The cokes were served in really appealing big glasses, which was a bonus – weirdly things like this make a real difference to my overall satisfaction. The service was exceptional, they couldn’t do enough for us and I’d definitely recommend this place if you’re in town and you’re hungry or if you just like good, authentic Thai food in a nice setting. Thank you Chaophraya, you finished off my birthday week nicely. I really must stop eating now, like really.
